The Imperial Company is a four generation business started in the early 1920s when George and Glen Johnson founded the Johnson Oil Company in Lakeview, Michigan with one gas station and bulk fuel distribution under the Philips 66 and White Star brands.

In 1938, the company was relocated to Mt. Pleasant and Lew Johnson joined the organization following World War II. The Imperial brand name was trademarked throughout the state of Michigan and served as the choice brand for fifty-two wholesale locations into the early 1970s.

Current president and CEO, Dave Johnson, joined the company in 1972 as the company transformed from wholesale to retail based and renamed the Imperial Company, Inc. The first convenience store in Charlevoix, Michigan opened in 1978 under the One Stop name and later became Next Door Store in conjunction with the re-introduction of a major brand gasoline Marathon. SUBWAY restaurants and the BP gasoline brand were all added in the early 2000’s.
